Before describing the different types of lawyers that exist, i thought i would talk about what lawyers actually are, why do we use them, and what are they supposed to do. Lawyers are by definition professionals of law that defend clients during court cases. In most cases several parties are involved (minimum of two generally).
The first reason for using a lawyer is simple. As anyone not involved in law, we have very little knowledge of it, and of our rights. The lawyer also called attorney, will have this knowledge which will ensure you a good defense during your court case. Without a lawyer you would surely be in big trouble! The lawyers goal is to defend you whether you are guilty or not. If you are innocent, well the lawyer will defend you in order to do his possible so that you may not be followed by justice any further. This is the main reason why you pay for a lawyer.
As everything is developing so quickly, lawyers have now become specialized by field. For example you can find personal injury lawyers, or DUI lawyers which are specialized in driving under substance court cases, or you can find medical lawyers (such as mesothelioma lawyers) which will be specialized in court cases that have to do with medical elements. You can find in each state or town (chicago lawyers, houston lawyers ...) lawyers which will be specialised in a specific domain. Also depending on your court case (domain, complexity), and on the quality of the lawyer, the price you will have to pay will increase substantially, but it is often worth the price you pay!
